Getting a Jaeger LeCoultre Mark XI:
The Joys of Opening the Mail (Part 1)

As I was leaving my apartment for work after lunch, and I spotted the mailwagon at the mailbox.

My heart quickened - “Do you have anything for me today?”, I inquired.

“Are you expecting a box?”, she replied.

A signature later, I was scampering home eagerly anticipating examining my prize. Nevermind work, I have more important things to attend to!

Is this for me?

Hmm, there's a box inside, with my name on it - it must be for me :)

Beads of sweat are forming on my forehead - there's definately something in there!

I can barely think, the blood beating against my ears! Another layer of bubble wrap! But I think I can see something!

My trembling hands rend asunder the last layer of bubble tape! It's here! It's really here!

Ahhh.....
It's time to enjoy a few moments of quiet contemplation as I savour the fleeting moments of “new watch”.

My heartbeat has now slowed to a leisurely 110 beats per minute now. I can think enough to realize I'm smiling..

Here's the profile view...

...and the caseback. This JLC Mark XI was RAF issue, and in total, there were 2700 examples produced. 2000 RAF models in 1948, 700 RAAF models in 1953. The broad arrow marking on top means this was Queen's property. “6B” means that was flight equipment, and together, “6B/346” is the Ministry of Defence specification number. “2112” is the serial number, and “48” is the year of issue. Noone knows what “B/97” means. Love that circular brushed finish.

Now the important part... Ah, the 35mm case looks so nice on my wrist. My Datejust in the corner looks a little left out. Poor guy, don't worry, I'll be back for you :)

Ain't she a beaut?

Oh, and after 24 hours, this guy seems to be about 7 seconds fast. Of course, it was in a constant state of being fully wound - I couldn't resist playing with/winding the Mark XI constantly :)

PS. Everything I know about my JLC Mark XI can be found at here. If you know anything about the Mark XI that I don't, please let me know.
